Frequently asked questions
Is Blade really free?
Yes. The full terminal with GPU rendering, Claude Code support, themes, tabs, and all core features is completely free. You also get 5 cloud hours per month to try cloud dev environments.
What are cloud hours?
Cloud hours are time spent running a cloud dev environment. Spin up an instance from your phone, tablet, or browser with Claude Code pre-installed and ready. Hibernated instances don't count against your hours. Instances auto-hibernate after 30 minutes idle.
What do I get with Blade Pro?
Blade Pro adds multiplayer terminal sessions (share your session, chat with E2E encryption, live cursors, driver/observer roles) plus 25 cloud hours per month. Additional cloud usage is $0.08/hr.
Why Blade Ultra?
Ultra is for heavy cloud users. You get 100 hours per month at a 25% cheaper overage rate ($0.06/hr vs $0.08/hr), dedicated instances, unlimited workspace persistence, and early access to new features.
How fast do cloud instances start?
Cold boot takes under 10 seconds thanks to Firecracker microVMs. Resuming a hibernated instance takes under 5 seconds. Your workspace, files, and terminal history are preserved across sessions.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Both Blade Pro and Blade Ultra come with a 14-day free trial. No credit card required to start.
How does billing work?
You pay a flat monthly fee for your plan. Cloud hours included in your plan are used first. Only running instances count. Hibernated instances are free. If you go over your included hours, additional usage is billed at your plan's rate.
Can I use my own API key for Claude Code?
Blade is a terminal, not an AI provider. You use your own Anthropic API key or Claude Code subscription. Blade just makes sure the terminal handles everything correctly.
Are cloud instances secure?
Each cloud instance runs in an isolated Firecracker microVM with its own kernel. Instances can't see each other, disks are encrypted at rest, and your API keys are stored in an encrypted vault.
